West Virginia Mountaineers

Under the terms of the 1862 Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act, the West Virginia Legislature created the Agricultural College of West Virginia on February 7, 1867. On December 4, 1868, lawmakers re-named it West Virginia University.

West Virginia University (WVU) is a public research university in Morgantown, West Virginia. Other campuses include: West Virginia University at Parkersburg in Parkersburg; West Virginia University Institute of Technology in Montgomery; Potomac State College of West Virginia University in Keyser; and a second clinical campus for the University's medical and dental schools at Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston. Since 2001, WVU has been governed by the West Virginia University Board of Governors.

Enrollment for the fall 2007 semester was 28,113. The University offers 185 majors in 15 colleges and has produced 25 Rhodes Scholars, including former WVU president David C. Hardesty Jr. The University also has produced 30 Goldwater Scholars, 19 Truman Scholars, five members of USA Today 's All-USA College Academic First Team, and two Morris K. Udall Undergraduate Scholarship winners. WVU is ranked by The Princeton Review as one of the best 368 colleges in the nation.

WVU is designated as a Research University (High Research Activity) by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Funding from external sources for total sponsored programs is $138 million. WVU is affiliated with the Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute, dedicated to the study of Alzheimer's and other diseases that affect the brain. WVU is also a leader in biometric technology research and recently became the Federal Bureau of Investigation's lead academic partner in biometrics research.

The West Virginia Mountaineers are the athletic teams of West Virginia University. The school is a member of National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I and the Big East Conference. The school's mascot is known as the Mountaineer. The two major sports at the university are football (played at the Mountaineer Field) and basketball (played at the WVU Coliseum), although many of the other sports have large followings as well. The West Virginia University athletic program also has the honor of being the only school in the nation in 2007 to win a BCS game, a NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament game, and a NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament game.

With a 678–447–45 record, West Virginia is the winningest Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team to have never won a national championship, ahead of Miami University and Virginia Tech. Beginning in the 1937-1938 season, West Virginia was classified as a College Division. From 1939–1972, West Virginia was in the University Division. From '73–'77, WVU was Division I, then from 1978–2006 WVU was Division I-A. From 2006–present West Virginia is classified as a Football Bowl Subdivision team.

WVU played mainly as an Independent from 1891 to 1990, with intermittent stints in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (1925–1927), and the Southern Conference (1950–1967). Since 1991, after reclassifications as a Division 1 Independent (1973–1977) and a Division 1-A Independent (1978–1990), the team competes in the Big East Conference. WVU had no team in 1892 and 1918.

West Virginia has had 3 undefeated regular seasons; they went 11-0 in 1988 and 1993. However, West Virginia lost both bowl games, 34–21 to Notre Dame, and 41–7 to Florida. Both undefeated regular seasons were under their coach Don Nehlen. Back in 1922 WVU had their only completely undefeated season; they went 10-0-1, beating Gonzaga in the inaugural East-West Bowl.

WVU has been conference champions thirteen times (8 in the Southern Conference, five in the Big East Conference). West Virginia's highest-ever poll ranking is #1 (in the Coaches Poll following Week 13 of the 2007 season). WVU has participated in 27 bowl games; their record stands at 13–15. Major bowls include the Sugar Bowl (3 times), Peach Bowl (4 times), Fiesta Bowl (2 times), and the Gator Bowl (6 times). The Mountaineers are 2–0 in BCS bowl games, both wins under quarterback Pat White.

With such a great and historic tradition, its easy to see why the West Virginia Mountaineers have such a rabid and devout fan base and one of the best in all of college sports.
